Best BBQ in the valley, but now closed. This was a spin off of Love's BBQ... This is the recipe for Love's BBQs Basting Sauce I actually got this from a chef who worked at Love's. It is most probably the same as Valley Ranch. What is missing is the Tomato ingredient. I suspect that tomato paste was used. You will have to scale it down. Pickling spice seems to be the special ingredient. Valley Ranch had an in the ground smoker. It looked like the doors on Dorothy Gale's tornado shelter (wizard of oz) It probably would be illegal in LA, these days. Also one might think this was for Chicken, but Valley Ranch's Their chicken was different than the beef, I think the chicken marinade had some cloves in it. Someone used this recipe on Youtube after I posted it and made chicken. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y63CEVWrIrs 1 gal cider vinegar 28 cups brown sugar 1 cup salt 1 cup onion powder 1 cup garlic powder 1celery seed 1/2 cup black pepper 1/2 cup paprika 1 cup lard 4 cups pickling spices Add vinegar and brown sugar to pot over medium hot and blend by stirring. Add other ingredients as you add them stir so they will all blend together. Keep and eye on the pot because if boils over you will have a mess you wont believe. let cook for about 45 minutes, and lower the heat if foam up to fast.

Learned to fly airplanes at the Van Nuys airport up the road in early 1980s, ate at this place for about 35 years..loved it..my flight instructors would buy me a drink at their great old fashioned bar after I passed all my flight tests...then one day, I drove by after landing at VNY...and it was closed...very sad

So very sad this restaurant closed. It was close to where I lived in Lake Balboa. Good food. Great ribs. Loved the atmosphere with that little train running around the top of the restaurant. Miss you Valley Ranch!

Dined here again. I stand by my review, this is a great BBQ place. Like any BBQ joint though, you have to know what their specialty is. Again, stick to the sliced meats and chicken. I did have the ribs as well this time, and they were great but not the best I have ever had. Their beans are simply the best. All their meat is smoked in brick pits. If you don't believe it, ask to see them (they are right behind the counter when you walk in). Their steak fries are awesome and I must confess I really made a pig out of myself on this latest visit. This place is legendary in the SFV, so you owe it to yourself to stop on in. As stated in my prior review, this location is 99% the same as it was when I started eating here as a kid in the early 1970's.
